Our love for science and the outdoors brought us together, but our careers kept us anchored to city life. After graduate school, we entered the corporate world, and our outdoor adventures were quickly reduced to weekends and the occasional vacation.
Before having our first child, our careers were the center of our lives. Parenthood changed that instantly, family became our true priority. Then the COVID pandemic shifted our perspective even further. It revealed how vulnerable we were and how limited our ability was to provide for our family during emergencies. Becoming more self-sustaining no longer felt optional; it became essential. So we decided to take the leap and look for “some land.”
We eventually found what our then-four-year-old called a "little patch of heaven” in Crockett, TX. It is a long 50-acre stretch of cattle pasture that we’re slowly cultivating into something of our own. We’re figuring everything out as we go and though we still work regular jobs, our dream is to operate a homestead that can sustain our family.
In a way, we have found our way back to what first connected us and sharing this experience with our children makes it even better!
